About The MENTOR Initiative

The MENTOR Initiative is a UK-registered, charitable, not-for-profit, non-governmental organization focused on alleviating human suffering from tropical diseases.

With support from BHA-PUI, USDA, and UNF, we are implementing an Emergency Control of Malaria program in high-risk areas of Borno State, Nigeria. Their work includes capacity building and effective planning for malaria and vector-borne disease control in partnership with the Nigerian Ministry of Health.

Nurse Position at MENTOR Initiative

  • Duration: 6 Months (Renewable based on funding availability)
  • Start Date: As soon as possible
  • Reports To: Medical Officer

Job Purpose

We are seeking a dedicated Nurse to join our team in Maiduguri, Borno State, as part of our Emergency Response Program. The primary objective is to ensure improved, lifesaving disease prevention and health services for vulnerable communities in Borno State.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Mobile Clinic Operations
    • Set up medical sites, ensuring all furniture, equipment, and materials are ready.
    • Prepare and organize necessary drugs, materials, and tools for mobile clinics.
    • Perform patient triage, take vital signs (weight, temperature, BP), and issue MDM numbers for consultations.
    • Administer deworming drugs to children as per protocol.
    • Maintain patient confidentiality and treat all individuals with respect.
    • Identify and refer medical emergencies to doctors promptly.
  2. Medical and Paramedic Support
    • Perform basic medical procedures including malaria rapid diagnostic tests, urine dipstick tests, haemoglobin tests, and injections as needed.
    • Clean and sterilize dressings and medical equipment daily.
    • Administer vaccinations based on immunization status and EPI calendar.
    • Monitor the quantity of vaccines and other medical consumables used.
  3. Health Education
    • Conduct health education sessions in waiting areas, covering topics like hygiene, safe water, nutrition, immunization, antenatal care, post-natal care, and family planning.
  4. Data Collection and Reporting
    • Collect and analyze daily medical data related to paramedic actions.
    • Assist in the weekly compilation of epidemiological data.
    • Prepare and submit weekly reports to the Team Leader.
    • Participate in internal meetings and trainings organized by MENTOR.
  5. Logistics and Support
    • Participate in the loading and unloading of vehicles and setting up of mobile clinics.
    • Assist in the weekly inventory of mobile clinic pharmacy.
    • Offer suggestions to improve mobile clinic operations.
    • Be flexible in performing other duties as required by the team leader.
    • Ensure communication with the security focal point in case of any field security issues.
  6. Ethics and Integrity
    • Adhere to MENTOR’s Code of Conduct, including safeguarding policies and the Whistleblowing policy.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Required:
    • Recognized nursing and/or midwifery qualification.
    • Clinical experience in primary health care, integrated community case management, malaria, and vector-borne disease control programs.
    • Experience in community & public health, nutrition in emergencies (advantageous).
    • Previous experience in coaching, training, and capacity building of healthcare workers.
    • Familiarity with clinical protocols, including iCCM and national malaria treatment guidelines.
    • Experience working with primary healthcare systems and mobile clinics in Nigeria.
    • Previous experience supervising staff and working with INGOs/NGOs.
  • Languages:
    • Fluency in English and Kanuri is mandatory.
    • Knowledge of Hausa is an advantage.
  • Skills:
    • Strong organizational, communication, and management skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
